Rendezvous on the slopes of Mount Haleakala for a Picnic under the Stars with Maui resident astronomer, Becky Sydney

TOUR INFORMATION

Stargazing locations range between 4500 feet elevation – 6500 feet elevation on the slopes of Haleakala mountain and will be determined based on weather conditions the day of your tour.

Learn all the stars, planets and constellations by a professional astronomer.

Delicious Vegetarian Organic Picnic

Cheese, crackers, kosher baby dill pickles, pimento stuffed green olives, fresh local fruit choices, nuts, cookies, popcorn, chocolate, chips, dried fruit, energy bars, and gummies as well as a plethora of other snacks.

Keep Warm

Coats, hats, gloves, blankets, hand warmers included.

Comfort

Chairs, mats, blankets for comfy sunset and stargazing.

Goodies

To help combat high elevation and car sickness effects, goodies such as ginger chews, coffee nibs, vitamin C lollipops, chewing gum and sunscreen are provided.

PLAN

Guests will decide if they want to watch sunset with astronomer or on their own.

LOGISTICS

If guests want to watch sunset with astronomer on location or in the Park, we can meet at Longs Drug Store 2 hours before sunset for verbal briefing and to obtain coats, hats, gloves, chairs, goodies for the drive, etc.

If guests want to hike/visit the Park during the day and meet Becky on the way down, the briefing will be texted to them with location information where to meet.

If guests want to meet only for stargazing, the briefing will be texted to them with location information where to meet Becky.

WEATHER CALL

A weather call will be given by 1:00PM the day of the tour. If winds are over 25 mph or if there are heavy clouds or rain, the tour will be rescheduled.

REFUNDS

If a tour is cancelled and guests are unable to reschedule, a full refund will be issued.  If weather turns bad during stargazing, a partial refund will be issued.

Just outside Haleakala National Park, the curvy road hosts several dark lookout points with amazing stargazing and beautiful views of Maui.  Nice sunset spots too!  

Watch the magical Hawaiian owl, Pueo, and Haleakala cows as they become active under the night sky. 

Ideas for Sunset and Stargazing on the Slopes

Below are some ideas to help you plan your Haleakala adventure with my “Suggested Plans”.

Enjoy a healthy ORGANIC vegetarian picnic provided to sustain you in cold weather.

Be warm and comfy!  Also included are goodies for the drive, coats, hats, gloves, blankets, hand warmers, mats & chairs for sunset.

You’ll receive a weather update by 1:00PM on the day of your tour.

Hawaiian Monthly Star Map

Use a telescope to peer into the rich Milky Way while Becky points out all the stars, constellations, planets, satellites and shooting stars with a cool green laser pointer. 

Restrooms are available at the Haleakala National Park Visitor Centers at 7000 ft. and 9740 ft. elevations. NO RESTROOM is available on the Slopes of the mountain….sorry….the closest one is a 4 minute drive into the Park.

PARK INFO:

The Entrance to Haleakala National Park starts at 7000 feet elevation. Summit of Haleakala starts at 9740 feet – 10,023 feet elevation. Entrance fee is $25 per car.

Join Maui astronomer Becky Sydney on the Slopes of Haleakala between 4500 feet – 6500 feet elevation for amazing Maui views, spectacular stargazing and a delicious organic picnic. Stargazing location to be determined on the day of tour based on weather conditions.

SUGGESTED PLAN A

Watch sunset with astronomer Becky on the Slopes of Haleakala as she sets up for the nights stargazing and picnic adventure.  Example below is for month of January.

NOTE: Meeting times change throughout the year depending on sunset times.  We meet approximately 2 hours before sunset.

4:00PM – Meet Becky at Pukalani Longs Drug Store (CVS) parking lot for briefing, coats and goodies.

4:30PM – Follow Becky in your car to stargazing site.

5:00PM – Relax or explore while Becky sets up for stargazing.

6:00PM – Sunset and Picnic.

6:30PM – Stargazing begins.

8:00PM – Finish.

SUGGESTED PLAN B

Watch sunset in Haleakala National Park and on the way down the mountain join Becky for stargazing and picnic. Stargazing Location is 1 mile from Park entrance.

NOTE: Entrance Fee for Haleakala National Park is $25 per car. Temperatures are very cold at on Haleakala, bring layers of clothes to keep warm. Directions to stargazing site will be texted to your phone.

If you’d like a coat, hat, gloves, chair, mat and blanket for a comfortable sunset experience in the Park, meet Becky 2 hours before sunset at Longs Drugs Store in Makawao/Kula area.  Example itinerary is for the month of January.

NOTE: Meeting times change throughout the year depending on sunset times.  We meet approximately 2 hours before sunset.

4:00PM – Meet Becky at Pukalani Longs Drug Store parking lot for coats and goodies.

4:30PM – Drive on your own to the summit of Haleakala. (1 hour drive from Longs)

6:00PM – Watch Sunset then Start drive down mountain.

6:30PM – Stargazing and picnic begins at designated location.

8:00PM – Finish.

SUGGESTED PLAN C

Spend the day in Haleakala National Park and on the way down the mountain, join Becky for stargazing. You can also watch sunset at the Summit or can watch sunset with Becky at the stargazing location outside the Park.

NOTE: Entrance Fee for Haleakala National Park is $25 per car.   Stargazing site is mile from Park entrance.

SUGGESTED PLAN D

Meet for stargazing only on the slopes of Haleakala.  Stargazing site is 1 mile from Haleakala Park entrance.
